In my experience of making art, I’ve come to understand that there is no such thing as leaving the past completely behind. To move forward with new ideas, I’ve found it beneficial to reach back every once in a while and choose the better ideas to form the foundations of new work. A good example of this is present in the paintings I’m showing in this exhibition, of which there are three. Of them, Cossia (2012), is the older, while Breach II and Transmission VII were made in 2016. All three have forms of geometric abstraction and experimentation that tie them together, despite four years between Cossia and the later paintings.
In 2016, I made a series of small paintings that shared the title of Transmissions. Transmission VII, seen here, is an outlier from that series in that it’s larger than the others at 12 inches square, while the others measure 8” x 6” and are black/white monochromatic paintings.
